Main Source for me was always a name I’d hear in the background, and although I was aware of what’s probably their most known contribution to hip hop, that being the breaking of Hip Hop’s greatest MC tied with only Biggie Smalls in Nas. It was the Main Source avenue he used to do so, on their song Live at the BBQ. That verse broke Nas in New York City on another level, and led to him getting his record deal and the rest went down in classic hip hop history. Later on Main Source would break another classic group of artist that turned out to be the Lox, showing maybe they were really the source to everything you were lacking that could put you over the top. Although they were natural at it, Main Source weren’t simply assist men and that’s it. They had a few top 20 rap hit like the #1 “Looking at the front door” and “Fakin the Fuck” and “Just Hanging out” to name a few. Of course overtime “Live at the BBQ” also grew into legendary status in hip hop history. They were all a part of their debut album “Breaking atoms”, that is widely considered a classic and timeless hip hop album, and I would agree. No question highly regarded legends in the game, but for these reasons those atoms did evolve into what could’ve been and many overlook their contribution to hip hop. Left After a Classic!
