Muscle Growth | Immune System | Build Muscle the Right Way Colostrum & Immune System Support: Lactoferrin- One specific compound contained in colostrum is lactoferrin. Lactoferrin, as its name may suggests to you, is a protein which is critical in the metabolism of iron. Receptors are found all around the body in organs and cells for lactoferrin to bind. Lactoferrin has been shown to inhibit autoimmune responses which trigger inflammatory conditions such as increased intestinal permeability. Lactoferrin also plays a role in activating T-cells, antigen response pathways and the ability of enzymes to function. Lactoferrin has been found to scavenge for free radicals and is also a strong antioxidant which aids the body in the detoxification process. Decreased circulating lactoferrin handicaps the autoimmune response and increases the risk of cancer and autoimmune diseases. GcMAF- Bovine colostrum derived components have been found to activate GcMAF (Gc protein-derived macrophage-activating factor) In other words, bovine colostrum stimulates a macrophage-activating factor known as GcMAF derived from a vitamin D-binding protein. GcMAF is critical for the proper functioning of the immune system in the human body. An increase in GcMAF is associated with the repair of damaged tissue from trauma, infectious agents, and the development of cancer including ovarian, bladder and colorectal. The use of a macrophage activating therapy, such as macrophage activating factor (MAF), has extensive applications for treating numerous diseases by activating the natural macrophages of the body to stimulate the immune system. An essential component of the innate immune system, macrophages are phagocytic cells that multiply in response to an infection within the body. Macrophages distinguish, overwhelm, and obliterate pathogens, cancer cells, and foreign substances. These macrophages also circulate cytokines and eliminate cellular debris and cells that have undergone apoptosis. Respiratory Infection Study- Researchers found that taking bovine colostrum by mouth for 8-12 weeks can reduce of the number of episodes and symptoms of upper airway infections in people who exercise. Bovine colostrum is proposed as a nutritional countermeasure to the risk of upper respiratory symptoms (URS) during exercise training. So, a meta-analysis review was published in the journal BMC Sports Science, Medicine and Rehabilitation was conducted: Databases of published, unpublished and ongoing studies were searched for randomised controlled trials of healthy adults (≥18 years), evaluating the effect of oral bovine colostrum supplementation compared to a concurrent control group on URS 5 trials (152 participants) met the inclusion criteria, all of which involved individuals involved in regular exercise training. Over an 8–12 week follow-up period, bovine colostrum supplementation when compared to placebo significantly reduced the incidence rate of URS days and URS episodes by 44% and 38% respectively.
