Kite flying, which dates back more than 2,000 years in China, is thought to have started as a means of passing military information during war. It has now become a popular pastime in spring. At this small kite shop near Nanluogu Xiang (Alley), one of the oldest hutong in Beijing, a treasure trove of kite-making knowledge has been passed on to the fourth generation of a family who used to make kites for the imperial family.
