The Scandalous Cross
Sunday, September 14, 2025 Pastor Jonathan Sobel's message, based on John 3:13-17, reflects on how the cross, though a common symbol in our churches, should still shock and unsettle us. In Paul’s letter to the Corinthians, the cross is described as foolishness to some and offensive to others, yet for believers it is the very power of God. Pastor Jonathan's message reminds us that the cross once represented execution and shame, but through Christ it became a symbol of God’s radical love, solidarity, and triumph over the world’s distorted views of power. To lift high the cross is to proclaim that no one is beyond God’s love and that God’s redeeming power is greater than death itself. Even when it seems illogical or scandalous, the cross remains good news for the world.
