Anti-Erdogan protests flare in cities across Turkey: anger over government crackdown on dissent

Riot police fired rubber bullets and water cannon on Sunday (September 15) to quell the anti-government protests in Istanbul's Kadikoy district and southeast province of Hatay where a 22-year-old man, Ahmet Atakan, died this week during clashes between police and demonstrators. Early on Sunday, thousands of people gathered in Istanbul's Kadikoy district to attend an anti-government rally and commemorate those who died in clashes. The rally was peaceful in the beginning but police charged at protesters when they wanted to march to the ruling AK Party's headquarters in Kadikoy.
