But with the right tools, you can overcome those nerves and achieve your best results. Breathing Exercise: This exercise is called ‘Box Breathing’ Inhale: If it’s safe, close your eyes, then gently breathe in through your nose to a slow count of four. Feel your lungs fill and your stomach expand. Hold: Hold your breath for a count of four. Keep your body relaxed. Exhale: Slowly release the breath through your mouth for a count of four. Hold: Pause for another count of four before your next inhale. Continue this pattern of inhaling, holding, exhaling, and holding for four counts each for a few minutes. Focus on the sensation of your breath entering and leaving your body. If your mind wanders, gently bring your attention back to your breath. There's no need to judge yourself, just return to the exercise. When you're ready, slowly open your eyes or lift your gaze. IEMT (Integral Eye Movement Therapy) Exercise: Identify the issue: Imagine you are getting ready to start your exam. Notice the unwanted emotions this brings up for you. Notice the feeling: Close your eyes and focus on where you feel the emotion in your body. Notice the physical sensations (e.g., tightness in your chest, tension in your shoulders). Eye movements: While keeping the feeling in mind, open your eyes and begin moving them gently from side to side. It may help to follow your finger or a penlight. Do this for about 30 seconds. Notice changes: Briefly pause and check in with your body. Notice if there are any changes in the intensity or location of the emotion. Repeat: Repeat steps 3 and 4 a few more times, noticing any shifts in your emotional state. Reflect: Take a few moments to reflect on your experience. What did you notice about the emotion as you did the eye movements?
