Catholic TV Mass Online November 22, 2020: Our Lord Jesus Christ the King
Presider: Fr. Matthew Widder Parish: Catholic Community of Waukesha TEXT FROM THE HOMILY One of the more nerve wracking occasions in life is to undergo a surgery. To undergo a major surgery. In some sense the surgery is nerve wracking and we hope that we're going to make it out after surgery but for many people what is the most scary, provides the most nervousness, is after the surgery. That sense of being vulnerable. That sense of not being able to maybe clothe oneself not being able to go to the store, not be able to drive oneself, and to realize oh my! I’m going to have to count on someone else to take care of me. I’m going to have to wait, I’m going to have to count on someone else to take care of me. And especially in our culture as independent as we are as let's do it ourselves, that's especially difficult. That's especially difficult but the challenge is even if we want to after a major surgery, we can't do it. We have to count on someone else. And I'd like to use that as an image of the situation that we're in, in terms of our human condition. St. Paul paints a dire picture and then a beautiful picture because he says in Adam we were all born into death yikes! That's the bad news. What does he say? We're all helpless. We all can't achieve salvation on our own. We are cut off. We're in deep trouble. But then the good news, but in Christ we are all brought to life but in Christ we are all brought to life. That's the Christian message. That's the paschal mystery that we were dead and brought to life in Christ. That it is Christ that ministers to us that calls us into a relationship with him in the sacraments and then calls us to be him, to share his love, his mercy with those around us the gospel that we just heard is an examination of conscience. For are we carrying on the love of Christ? We think in the same way that sometimes we care for others in that story, when we care for others we're not just caring for that person but we're caring for Christ himself. Are we following the reign of our good shepherd who is close to those who are hungry, those who are thirsty, those who are naked, those who are in prison, those who are on the margins. That's where Christ is. That's where the king of the universe Jesus Christ is. We humbly admit that we all need a savior. That we've all been born into death but through Christ we inherit life. To let our Lord Jesus Christ king of the universe minister to us to bring our souls to life. To bring our souls into the joy that Christ has promised but then not to stop at ourselves, and to let that love, that mercy overflow into the most in need. Praise God that we serve a loving Lord, a good shepherd who ministers to us, cares for us, and invites us into his healing ministry. Entrance: Alleluia! Sing To Jesus Text: Revelation 5:9; William C.
