19 Students Hurt In Colorado School Bus Crash

WELD COUNTY, Co. -- Several high school students were injured in Colorado Thursday after a truck hit their school bus and it rolled over. The driver of that truck admits he fell asleep at the wheel. "I just saw a bunch of kids laying on the ground." The scene shocked farmers working nearby. "You see these kids getting rolled out on stretchers, getting pulled out of the bus." Students from two Greeley high schools. On their way back from a field trip at Elitch Gardens when their bus was sideswiped by this truck and flipped a full time before landing on its side. It all happened on Weld County road 49 a few miles north of Hudson. The kids had to escape through emergency roof hatches on the bus. 27 people were taken to several hospitals, the most to Northern Colorado Medical Center. "We anticipate that most patients will be treated and released this evening." That bus had seat belts. It's unclear if or how many students were wearing them. "All these parents of these kids gotta go through this. It's gonna be tough." Nearby oil site workers may have helped out. Unfortunately the crash doesn't come as a surprise to those who drive this road everyday. "They set the speed limit at 65 with this new 4 way and people just go 80, 85, just do as they will. It's terrible." One injured person had to be airlifted to another hospital. Two others will spend the night at the original hospital treating them. The truck driver was not arrested, but could face careless driving charges. (KMGH for CNN)
