2023 10 22 Holy God We Praise Thy Name
On the Twenty-First Sunday After Pentecost, October 22, 2023, the congregation of Immanuel Lutheran Church of Colorado Springs sang "Holy God, We Praise Thy Name," hymn #940 in the Lutheran Service Book. The text was originally Latin, c. 4th century; the German version came from Katholisches Gesangbuch, Vienna, 1774, and translated by Clarence A. Walworth, 1820-1900. The tune also came from Katholisches Gesangbuch, Vienna, 1774; the setting is from The Worshipbook: Services and Hymns, 1972. In verse 4, you'll see the word "Tributary." A "tributary" is one who pays a tribute that is owed. From the cross, Christ paid the penalty of death on our behalf. The complete, seven-stanza version of this versification of the Te Deum laudamus may be found in Lutheran Service Builder.
