This results in the formation of two distinct embryos. Genetic Makeup: The two embryos are genetically different, just like regular siblings. They inherit different genetic material from each parent, which means they may or may not resemble each other physically. Placenta and Amniotic Sac: In most cases, each embryo has its own placenta (dichorionic) and amniotic sac (diamniotic). However, in some cases, they may share a placenta but still have separate amniotic sacs (monochorionic, diamniotic). Sex: Dizygotic twins can be of the same sex (two boys or two girls) or of different sexes (one boy and one girl). Incidence: This is the more common type of twin pregnancy. Factors Influencing Likelihood: Hereditary factors: A family history of twins, particularly on the mother's side, can increase the chances. Maternal age: Women aged 30-40 are more likely to release multiple eggs during ovulation. Race and ethnicity: Some populations, like African Americans, have a higher rate of dizygotic twins. Fertility treatments: Treatments like ovulation-inducing drugs or IVF can increase the likelihood of multiple eggs being released. 2. Monozygotic Pregnancy (Identical Twins) Definition: A monozygotic pregnancy occurs when a single fertilized egg (zygote) splits into two embryos. This results in genetically identical twins. Genetic Makeup: The two embryos share the same genetic material, meaning they are genetically identical. This is why monozygotic twins are also called identical twins. Placenta and Amniotic Sac: Monozygotic twins can have different placental arrangements depending on when the zygote splits: Dichorionic, Diamniotic: If the split occurs early (within 3 days after fertilization), the twins will have separate placentas and separate amniotic sacs. Monochorionic, Diamniotic: If the split happens between 4-8 days after fertilization, the twins share a placenta but have separate amniotic sacs. Monochorionic, Monoamniotic: If the split happens later (8-13 days), the twins share both a placenta and an amniotic sac. The more shared structures (like a single placenta or amniotic sac), the higher the risk for complications, such as restricted growth or cord entanglement. Sex: Monozygotic twins are always of the same sex because they have identical genetic material (e.g., both are male or both are female). Incidence: Monozygotic pregnancies are less common than dizygotic pregnancies, occurring in about 1 in 250 pregnancies. Factors Influencing Likelihood: Random occurrence: Unlike dizygotic pregnancies, there are no known genetic, racial, or environmental factors that influence the likelihood of a monozygotic pregnancy.
