Korea's ex-Prime Minister Hwang Kyo-han was elected as the new chief of Korea's main opposition Liberty Korea Party, marking an end to the party's seven-month long emergency leadership system. Hwang was prime minister from 2015 to 2017 during the Park Geun-hye administration and also served as acting president when Park was impeached in late 2016 over a string of corruption and power abuse charges. Speaking at the party's national convention on Wednesday, Hwang, who swept victory with more than 67 thousand votes, vowed to bring innovative changes to the party's future. "As soon as I step down from this stage, I will begin our fierce battle to save the country and our people and fight against the Moon Jae-in administration. I embark on our journey towards our party's success during next year's general elections and for turn over the political power in our country." At first, eight contenders announced their bids to run for the position but only three joined the race, including former Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon and far-right lawmaker Kim Jin-tae. The party also elected four of its supreme council members and one member to represent the younger generation, who will assist (Hwang) to lead the party for the next two years. The newly elected leadership, alongside floor leader Na Kyung-won, are tasked with bringing the party together and ending its factional divide between loyalists of ousted President Park Geun-hye and those against her, and to regain public trust and pave the road for the next general elections in 2020.
