Sing along with "Peggy Sue" to practice the /p/ and /s/ consonant sounds as well as the /ɛ/ as in RED and /u/ as in BLUE color vowel sounds. The /p/ and /b/ sounds take the same mouth position with the lips starting fully together then releasing quickly to produce a small release of air. The /p/ sound is unvoiced while the /b/ sound requires that the vocal cords vibrate. The /s/ and /z/ sounds take the same mouth position. For both, the sides of the tongue touch the middle and back upper teeth while the tip of the tongue is lowered a bit. Air flows out the middle part of the tongue. The /s/ sound is voiceless and sounds hissy and breathy while the /z/ sound is voiced and sounds buzzy. The /z/ requires the activation of the vocal cords while the /s/ sound does not. PEGGY: /ɛ/ as in RED and /i/ as in GREEN vowel sounds SUE: /u/ as in BLUE vowel sound To make the /ɛ/ as in RED sound, the tongue is relaxed in the mid-high position. The lips are farther apart than they are for the /ei/ as in GRAY sound. To produce the /u/ as in BLUE vowel sound, the lips are rounded and extended forward, as if blowing out candles. The tongue is slightly tense and in a high position.
