BEWARE: 9 Foods That Kill Your Dog
Dogs don’t always know what’s good for them. A lot of times they’re just looking for a snack no matter where it comes from. Did you know that some common food items that we cook with or eat, can actually be harmful for our dogs? In this video we cover 9 types of human foods that can be toxic and potentially fatal to your dog. Know what foods to avoid to keep your beloved dog safe. Here are some of the most toxic foods for dogs: These foods could kill your dog. Garlic and Onions - These commonly used vegetables are part of the allium family. They contain a toxin, thiosulfate, that is harmful to dogs but not humans. Symptoms of garlic toxicity are vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite, rapid breathing and abdominal pain. Although these vegetables add flavor to just about any dish, keep them away from your dog. Chocolate is maybe the most commonly known food that is dangerous to dogs. Chocolate contains caffeine and theobromine - which is another compound that acts just like caffeine. These chemicals are both stimulants and can cause racing heart, panting, increased thirst, seizures and heart failure. Although chocolate poisoning is rarely fatal, it’s best to take any ingestion seriously. Keep those holiday treats away from curious paws. Avocados are great on toast, but can make your pooch very sick. Multiple parts of the avocado contain persin which can cause diarrhea and vomiting. Many other animals are also sensitive to avocados, so it is best to enjoy them with your human friends only. Grapes and raisins were a mystery toxin for a long time. We knew that they were toxic to dogs but not sure what the specific cause was. Recently, it’s been discovered that tartaric acid is the culprit. This can cause vomiting, diarrhea and in extreme cases, kidney failure. Dogs are highly sensitive to grapes and raisins, even a single ingestion could be fatal. Cooked Bones seem like a strange danger for dogs considering all the associations we have about dogs with bones. Raw bones are typically the type of bones given to or sold for dogs. Raw bones can help temper anxiety and clean your dog’s teeth. Cooked bones however, can splinter when chewed on and cause irreparable damage to your dog's digestive system. If you do decide to give your dog a raw bone, make sure to supervise them while they are chewing. Nutmeg is technically a spice but giving your dog any food with nutmeg in should be avoided. Nutmeg has myristicin which can cause high blood pressure, abdominal pain and seizures. Different dogs may have different tolerance levels but it’s best to steer clear from your dog ingesting any nutmeg. Corn cobs might sound like a tasty chew toy for your pet. Corn is a popular ingredient in dog food, the cobs however are not safe for your dog to chew on. The corn cobs can break apart and cause your dog to choke. If your dog did manage to swallow a corn cob, it could cause a bowel blockage. Corn cobs aren’t toxic, but they are dangerous. If your pet eats any of these foods, don’t wait to see if they get sick. Contact your vet straight away for advice on how to treat them. While small amounts of these foods may not always be fatal, immediate action can mitigate symptoms and ensure your dog’s wellbeing. It’s best to not make a habit of feeding your dog from the table, regardless of the type of food. If the dog in your house tends to sneak food off the table or abandoned plates after a meal, be extra careful when enjoying these dangerous foods.
