Rachel Reeves’ latest Budget takes UK taxes to a record level as she raises another £26bn to cover higher welfare costs and create a larger financial buffer, pushing the tax burden to 38 per cent of GDP by the end of the parliament; the plan freezes income tax thresholds, adds new property and dividend levies, and brings in other charges, while spending rises sooner through measures like ending the two-child benefit cap, leading critics to call it a “spend now, pay later” approach. Although the OBR warns that weaker growth, lower productivity and rising taxes squeeze living standards, the financial markets welcome the larger fiscal headroom, giving the government slightly cheaper borrowing costs.
