Hashimoto's Thyroid - Pharmacist Ben Fuchs - Moment of Truth

Hypothyroidism, nicknamed "the hidden illness", affects three to five percent of Americans, mostly women. According to Dr. Broda Barnes, who came up with the moniker, the condition underlies almost all other chronic diseases. While the primary medical strategy of treating a poorly functioning thyroid is with hormones, they're mostly ineffective. That's because pharmaceutical thyroid hormone, known by various names such as Synthroid, Cytomel or the generic term Levothyroxine, dispensed to replace an inadequate supply of the natural stuff, does nothing to address the underlying cause of a weak thyroid. While nutritional supplements, like iodine, selenium, the B vitamins and vitamin A may be helpful for the hypothyroid patient, unless there's a full-blown deficiency, those too can do little to reverse the metabolic basis of the disease. The primary biochemical dysfunction linked to hypothyroidism is an autoimmune illness known as Hashimoto's disease. While there is little the medical model can do to cure or reverse Hashimoto's, like all autoimmune and chronic illnesses, medicine isn't necessary. We can reverse it ourselves. All autoimmunity, whether it shows up as multiple sclerosis, lupus, type 1 diabetes or Hashimoto's, needs to be treated first as a digestive and food problem. Most importantly, keep a journal, chart reactions to foods and eliminate the ones that cause problems. Probiotics can help, likewise digestive enzymes and apple cider vinegar taken with all meals. The Hashimoto's patient would be wise to make sure he or she is enjoying lots of vegetables and veggie juices including the fiber.
