Sir Keir Starmer will face his final PMQs before an expected Labour wipeout at next week’s local elections. The Prime Minister is to take questions in the Commons at midday before the prorogation of Parliament in advance of crunch votes across England on May 7. Labour is on track to lose about 2,000 council seats and is also forecast to endure heavy defeats at the Scottish and Welsh elections on the same day. The local elections represent the next moment of jeopardy for Sir Keir’s premiership after he avoided an ethics inquiry over whether he misled Parliament over the Mandelson scandal. On Tuesday, MPs voted to prevent him being investigated by the privileges committee, which looked into Boris Johnson’s involvement in partygate, by 335 votes to 223. Kemi Badenoch, the Tory leader, is likely to scrutinise Sir Keir further over the appointment, while the publication of more of the Mandelson files is expected when Parliament returns next month.
