The Minstermen fared a bit better against Chesterfield on home ground than they did in the previous meeting at Saltergate but a 0-0 draw at Bootham Crescent was beneficial for neither side. John Duncan’s Spireites had had mixed fortunes since beating City 2-0 a month earlier, losing two then winning two of the four subsequent fixtures. Both sides were struggling to score goals so it was almost inevitable that the game would end scoreless. Kevin Davies came close for the visitors when he beat Tim Clarke to the ball in a one-on-one, but his effort trickled agonisingly wide. In the second half, Tony Lormer came even closer but Clarke pulled off a stunning save to keep York on level terms and the game ended one point per side. York City: Clarke, McMillan, Himsworth, Pepper (Randall), Tutill, Barras, Murty, Pouton, Tolson, Bull, Stephenson. Attendance: 3,328 Footage from ITV Sport Re-edited and Remastered by Phil Howden
