
Intermittent Fasting- Start your journey correctly | Dr. Vishakha Shivdasani | Intermittent Fasting
Intermittent fasting is a great way to balance your hormones, correct cholesterol profile, bring down blood sugars, improve your immunity, and of course, help with fat burn—ONLY when done correctly. I don’t recommend intermittent fasting 7 days a week for anyone! There is something called metabolic flexibility. This means your body should be able to burn fat for fuel and also switch to burning sugar (carbs) for fuel. Doing this, in my experience, is the best way to achieve both—burn fat AND balance hormones. I practice this myself and prescribe it to my patients too. P.S. This also allows you to eat more carbs when you are a sugar burner. Imagine not doing keto and eating MORE carbs and yet dropping the weight and changing your blood parameters. It’s a win-win. Yay! AND it’s sustainable. Where IF fails and can even cause hormonal imbalance is when people go extreme. Just because you see a celeb or an ‘influencer’ saying they are doing that 16/8 method 7 days a week, or worse still, a One Meal A Day (OMAD) every day, doesn’t make it the correct thing to do! And it definitely doesn’t mean it will also work for you. That almost always backfires (I spend most of my time rectifying patients & hormonal imbalances) Bio-individuality is a real thing, guys! From your hormonal profile to your gut microbiome... no two people have it the same! IF is supposed to help improve your health, but done incorrectly, it can do more harm than good. My 1st advice to getting into IF is: 1- Start slow! and 2- Always do IF under medical guidance.
