Sinusitis is present when the tissue lining the sinuses become swollen or inflamed. It occurs as the result of an inflammatory reaction or an infection from a virus, bacteria, or fungus. •Is sinusitis a serious problem?? It's not common. But a serious sinus infection can spread to the membranes and fluid around the brain and spinal cord. The infection is called meningitis. Other serious infections can spread to the bones, called osteomyelitis, or to skin, called cellulitis. Prevention Clean your hands. Receive recommended vaccines, such as the flu vaccine and pneumococcal vaccine. Avoid close contact with people who have colds or other upper respiratory infections. Don't smoke and avoid secondhand smoke. Use a clean humidifier to moisten the air at home.
