The abolition of the justice system will not solve indigenous crime

The abolition of prisons promoted by Indigenous activist Vickie Roach would ultimately “hurt more vulnerable people in indigenous communities” NSW One Nation Leader Mark Latham says. Ms Roach’s demand mirrors the Black Lives Matter push for the replacement of law enforcement systems including the police force and prisons with more comprehensive social services. Mr Latham told Sky News host Andrew Bolt while activists “talk about the harm of colonisation, the truth is the greatest harm to indigenous people in Australia today comes from other indigenous people”. “All the statistics show, all the data confirms that when the police arrest an indigenous person it’s normally in the context of protecting the safety and well-being of another indigenous person”. Prisons exist to punish and rehabilitate criminals and protect the vulnerable, Mr Latham said. “Roach does a great disservice to her own community by peddling this line”.
