FBI says no terrorism seen in California shooting

(27 May 2021) The FBI says they are considering the killing of nine people at a San Jose rail transit yard to be workplace violence, not an act of terrorism. FBI Special Agent in Charge Craig Fair told the Associated Press that while the FBI is not the lead agency in the investigation, they are helping investigate the crime scene and to clear any explosives. Fair noted that in a previous shooting investigation, evidence gathered by the FBI was used to prosecute a person who provided the weapons. A Biden administration official says a man accused of the shooting spoke of hating his workplace while he was detained by U.S. customs officers after a 2016 trip to the Philippines. Fair said he was aware of that report, but could not comment on it. Santa Clara County Sheriff Laurie Smith says the gunman told at least one person: "I'm not going to shoot you" at a light rail facility for the Valley Transportation Authority in San Jose. He then shot other people Wednesday before killing himself as deputies closed in.
