WARNING: We’re going to be yelling. If you’re not somewhere you can yell, still follow along and maybe turn your volume down so I don’t hurt your ears. Imagine you’re calling out to someone across the way. Let’s say your dog is running into the street, or your kid is about to knock over their milk at the table, and yell "HEY, STOP THAT!" Tune into what you’re doing with your breath before you start to yell... A BIG INHALE It may seem like taking a big breath before yelling would be helpful, but may have also noticed that yelling that way darkens your voice. When you've created a lighter, brighter resonance in the voice, the main change you’re making is in the size and shape of the tube. Specifically making it shorter and more narrow. When we take a deep breath, it increases the pressure of the air below that tube and when we yell, all that air rushes out at once and blows the tube open, which darkens the voice. What you should be doing instead of taking a deep breath is the opposite. Step one: breathe in Step two: blow out most of your air Step three: yell, "HEY STOP THAT!" Not only can you keep the brightness and thinness you’ve found in your voice, but you can yell in a healthy way without blowing out the tube! If you want to learn more about how to project your voice without letting it fall out, comment “STOP THAT” and I’ll reach out directly to talk resources and next steps. ❤, Nicole Gress
