The Most Reverend and Honourable Peter Slipper was the member for Fisher from 13 March 1993 to 7 September 2013. Slipper served as Speaker from November 2011 to October 2012. He has worked as a solicitor, barrister, farmer and businessman and then as a priest, bishop. Slipper was made chancellor and later Vicar-General of the Church of Torres Strait. Upon becoming Speaker, Slipper resigned from the Coalition, becoming the second-ever independent Speaker, the first being Frederick Holder, the 1st Speaker of the House of Representatives.
