The blasts were part of a string of grenade attacks in villages south of Srinagar, injuring 17 in total, as voting began in parts of Jammu-Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state. Separatists have called an election boycott and militants have threatened to kill anyone participating in the vote in Jammu-Kashmir, where an Islamic insurgency has raged for more than 14 years, aimed at separating the region from mainly Hindu India. More than 65,000 people have been killed since the Muslim-led insurrection began in 1989. More than two dozen people have died in Jammu-Kashmir since campaigning began, as militants targeted candidates, campaign workers, troops guarding stations, and voters. Some one (m) million people are eligible to elect one member of Parliament from Anantnag in the fourth round of India's five-phase, three-week national elections. But just three per cent of the electorate cast ballots in the first five hours of voting, Abid Ahmed, an Election Commission official said. An Associated Press team saw six anti-election demonstrations across the Anantnag district.
