Aftermath of shelling in rebel-held par of Donetsk

(28 Feb 2022) Rebel-controlled territories continued to be shelled on Monday, even as Russia pressed its invasion of Ukraine. One death was reported. Donetsk residents are hiding in bomb shelters. Local resident Lidiya Yamenko told the Associated Press that people hide in an elevator shaft. "It's the most secure place," she added. Exact death tolls are unclear, but the U.N. human rights chief said 102 civilians have been killed and hundreds wounded - warning that figure was likely a vast undercount - and Ukraine's president said at least 16 children were among the dead. Another U.N. official said Monday that more than 500,000 people have fled the country since the invasion - among the millions who have left their homes.
