Lesson 2: For October 11, 2025 SURPRISED BY GRACE Saturday, October 4 READ FOR THIS WEEK'S STUDY: Joshua 2:1-21; Numbers 14:1-12; Hebrews 11:31; Exodus 12:13; Joshua 9; Nehemiah 7:25 MEMORY TEXT: “By faith Rahab the prostitute did not perish with the unbelievers, because she had received the spies in peace” (Heb. 11:31, ESV). “Why did I do it again?” Perhaps we've all said that on more than one occasion, since history isn't the only thing that repeats itself. We humans also make the same mistakes. Israel had a second chance to enter the Promised Land, and Joshua took his mission seriously. The first step was to have a clear idea of what they were up against. To do this, he sent two spies to bring back valuable information about the territory they were to conquer: its defense system, its military preparation, its water reserves, and the population's attitude toward an invading force. One might think that God's promise to give the land to the Israelites required no effort on their part. However, the assurance of divine support did not negate human responsibility. Israel was for the second time on the border of Canaan. Expectations were high. The last time Israel had been on the border, with the same task, the result had been an abysmal failure. This week we will explore two of the most fascinating stories from the book of Joshua and discover their relevance to our faith today.
