GENESIS – Chapter 17 – KJV – Audio & Text with Headings
Genesis Chapter 17 Summary 1. God Reaffirms the Covenant (Verses 1-8) Thirteen years after Ishmael’s birth, God appears to Abram (now 99 years old) and introduces Himself as "El Shaddai" (God Almighty). God commands Abram to "walk before me and be blameless" (v. 1). He reaffirms His everlasting covenant with Abram, promising: To multiply him exceedingly (father of many nations). To change his name from Abram ("exalted father") to Abraham ("father of a multitude") (v. 5). To give the land of Canaan as an everlasting possession (v. 8). 2. The Sign of the Covenant: Circumcision (Verses 9-14) God establishes circumcision as the physical sign of the covenant. Every male in Abraham’s household (including servants) must be circumcised. This applies to all generations, including newborn boys on the 8th day. Uncircumcised males will be cut off from the covenant people (v. 14). 3. The Promise of a Son Through Sarah (Verses 15-22) God renames Sarai to Sarah ("princess") and promises she will bear a son. Abraham laughs in disbelief (v. 17), saying, "Shall a child be born to a man who is a hundred years old?" God confirms: The child will be named Isaac ("he laughs"). Isaac (not Ishmael) will be the heir of the covenant. Ishmael will still be blessed (father of 12 princes), but the covenant line will pass through Isaac. 4. Abraham’s Immediate Obedience (Verses 23-27) That same day, Abraham circumcises: Himself (at 99 years old). His son Ishmael (age 13). All male servants in his household. Key Themes Divine Sovereignty – God initiates and sustains the covenant, emphasizing His faithfulness. Name Changes – Abram ("exalted father") → Abraham ("father of multitudes"); Sarai → Sarah, signifying their new identity in God’s plan. Circumcision as a Covenant Sign – A physical mark of belonging to God’s chosen people (later contrasted with spiritual circumcision in the New Testament, e.g., Romans 2:29). Faith and Laughter – Abraham’s laughter reflects doubt, but God turns it into joy with Isaac’s promised birth. Isaac as the Child of Promise – The covenant lineage continues through Isaac, not Ishmael (key to biblical theology). Connection to the New Testament Paul references this chapter (Romans 4:11) to show Abraham’s faith before circumcision, proving justification by faith. Colossians 2:11-12 links Christian baptism to spiritual circumcision. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Book of Genesis is available in audio format from the King James Version of the Holy Bible.
