How to reseed bare spots on the lawn. You should look at the area to find out what type of seeds you need, I am using the Scotts shade mix. We are also using top soil and peat moss, for tools we have a couple rakes and a hand aerator and that should do it…We had an awful summer, with high temperatures and drought, Killing most of the grass. First we are lowering the grass, No I don’t wanna to scalp it, we are setting the mower at 1.5 inches and I am bagging the clips. Rake the area, you want to remove all the dead grass and expose more soil. I am using the ground keeper rake. We are aerating that section you want a good amount of holes, it will make it easier for the seeds to thrive. I also want to level this section, using a good quality top soil. This stuff is good, cheap and is available at my local lowes. Using the flat side of rake level the soil. Compacting the soil is a must and I am just using my feet for that. Let’s use the rake the right way now and slightly scratch the soil, you definitely don’t want to miss this step. Add seeds , depending on size of patch, you may wanna consider a spreader, I am doing by hand and putting a good amount of seeds down, don’t be shy put a good amount down… Again with the flat side of rake you just wanna mix things up. Keeping seeds as close to surface as possible I decided to add more seeds…For the final step we are putting peat moss just a fine amount and that’s going to do two things improve soil and seed contact and hide seeds from birds. The final step and the most important one is watering, you want to keep the area moist for the next 2-3 weeks. We got about 7 days and already have germination. Don’t stop watering area not all the seeds have sprouted.
