Contemporary World History (1750 - Present) [Lec 19]
Contemporary World History (1750 - Present) [Lec 19] (Spring quarter 2017, UCLA). Some further discussion of World War I, in particular the idea of 'obedience unto death', and the idea of sacrifice. Why did so many men willingly go their death? What was the social machinery of death? How was propaganda deployed? I then discuss some of the geopolitical consequences of World War I, beginning with German reparations, social anomie and unrest in Germany, the idea of humiliation in history, and the onset of the Weimar Republic. Between the wars, we should think of anti-colonialism, League of Nations, and the slow emergence of a global society. The period also saw the emergence of cinema, the assembly line, Taylorism, the newsreel, etc. In the closing minutes, I discuss Vienna at the turn of the century, and the milieu out of which came Freud, atonal music, anti-Semitism, and modernism in art. Last two minutes are on China in the late 19th and early 20th century, to set up the discussion for the next lecture.
