Contemporary World History (1750 - Present) [Lec 18]
Contemporary World History (1750 - Present) [Lec 18] (at UCLA, Spring 2017 quarter). I begin with the decline of the Ottoman empire and nationalist movements; role of European powers in shaping the Arab world, during and post-World War I. Some brief remarks on women's role in revolutions; lengthier observations on Sykes-Picot Agreement, the McMahon-Hussein Correspondence, the Balfour Declaration. Jewish migration into Palestine took place with British encouragement; the assumption was that the land under the Arabs was not productive. Post World War I, the British and French establish mandates in the Middle East. In the second half of my lecture, I describe briefly some 20th century contexts, including the demographic explosion, shift in rural-urban balance, colonialism and decolonization, the elevation of the nation-state, implosion of large empires, and massive technological spurts in society. Then I move to World War I contexts. What was the human toll of World War I?
