SOUNDBITE (English) George Flores, Car Wash Supervisor: "The biggest thing is, though, the rent. We used to have a lower price. Now it's up to like 800 or so, it went up 20% give or take, so from 600 to 800, that's $200. So that's a big rise. But besides that, I mean, I've been prepared." 4. Car wash supervisor and part-time bartender George Flores with family 5. SOUNDBITE (English) George Flores, Car Wash Supervisor "It's like food prices have been going up. So I do see impact like potatoes. And electricity, gas has been going up as well. Like my mother actually this year, she called me a couple of days ago telling me that her prices are like spiked like skyrocketed." 6. Woman with stroller 7. Woman getting on bus 8. SOUNDBITE (English) Angel Bernard, Retired from U.S. Army:   "Sometimes it is too expensive. It isn't covered.  What people do is 'I've got to trust God and see what's going to happen' and they give it up instead of trying to to to fight for it. But it's difficult because you've go to right now, I went to the dentist about a couple of months ago and to extract the something is like $150 before it used to be like only $50, $55, maybe $70 at the most. So everything now, even when you eat now, the supper you make sure you got for the next day, you got breakfast because you don't know if you're going to reach lunch time, you know the way you used to. So not to be pessimistic, but it's getting difficult for me and everybody else." 9. Daleshun Burden, an exterminator/pest control specialist, walking on sidewalk: 10. I don't ever go outside of my means, so I'm okay, you know, and inflation is not really bother me. You know, I understand some people are affected by it. I'm not one of them. You know, I'm doing what I have to do. A lot of, you know, I budget my money wisely and I have a great partner with me. So we're doing all right." 11. People on sidewalk 12. Various of Manhattan gas station with high prices STORYLINE: Lower gas costs slowed U.S. inflation for a second straight month in August, but most other prices across the economy kept rising — evidence that inflation remains a heavy burden for American households. Consumer prices rose 8.3% from a year earlier and 0.1% from July. But the jump in "core" prices, which exclude volatile food and energy costs, was especially worrisome. It outpaced expectations and ignited fear that the Federal Reserve will boost interest rates more aggressively and raise the risk of a recession. Chair Jerome Powell is expected to announce another big increase in the Fed's key rate next week, which will lead to higher costs for consumer and business loans.
