Barnier and Barclay depart after Brexit meeting

(11 Oct 2019) The EU's chief Brexit negotiator Michel Barnier met with Britain's Brexit Secretary Stephen Barclay in Brussels on Friday, to see whether any fundamental breakthrough could be made towards a divorce deal. The European Union and the United Kingdom had entered into fresh talks, following British Prime Minister Boris Johnson's meeting with Irish Prime Minister Leo Varadkar. Johnson said that there was a "pathway" to a belated deal to stave off a chaotic and costly no-deal Brexit on October 31, while Varadkar said the meeting was "very positive." The main stumbling block remains how the UK's only land border, between Britain and Ireland, is dealt with.
