Are Kegels the Best Thing For My Pelvic Floor? Why Functional Pelvic Floor Training Matters
Kegels. Yay or nay? It comes down to education and decision. Anyone who tells you kegels are the “best” thing for your pelvicfloor – run. Anyone who says “do not do them” - run. The all or nothing, silo approach needs to end. Kegels are ONE type of contraction. Just like a bicep curl or a glute bridge. But the pelvic floor needs way more than an isolated contraction. And in addition to needing both shortening and lengthening muscle contractions – it ALSO needs the surrounding system to be optimized. Your pelvic floor is only as functional as the container it lives in. Glutes, hamstrings, core, abs, hips – they all play a significant role in healing. It is of huge import that many people with prolapse incontinence Leaking with running or jumping or coughing low back pain pelvic pain Often feel WORSE with kegels because their pelvic floor is so tight and tense already. And a tight / tense and restricted pelvic floor does not love or need more tensioning. Add to the equation that the pelvic floor is a reflexive and automated system designed to operate in response to movement. NOT designed to be arbitrarily squeezed and tightened. A lot of tightening and squeezing with no context does not educate the pelvic floor to work in real life. The intelligent approach that actually works is one where the pelvic floor gets intelligent programming that includes 👉 Training the pelvic floor to be responsive and automated 👉 A variety of muscular contraction types rather than just shortening and squeezing 👉 Working on mobility and strength to the surrounding areas 👉 A functional approach rather than isolated exercises If you found this helpful, please give it a thumbs up and hit the subscribe button to stay updated with my latest content. 💜 Many ways to move with me online and in person.
