Cooper's Hawk – Agile hunters that often ambush feeder birds. Red-Shouldered Hawk – Loud, often seen perching on wires near woods. Sharp-Shinned Hawk – Smaller cousin to the Cooper's; visits winter feeders. 🐾 Woodland Wildlife (Mammals) White-Tailed Deer Coyote Fox (Red and/or Grey) – Gray foxes can climb trees! Eastern Chipmunk Southern Flying Squirrel – Strictly nocturnal. Eastern Gray Squirrel Virginia Opossum – North America's only marsupial. Raccoon 🐦 Year-Round Bird Residents Northern Cardinal Blue Jay Mourning Dove American Crow Carolina Chickadee Tufted Titmouse Carolina Wren – Loud "Teakettle!" song. Brown Thrasher – Georgia's State Bird! Northern Mockingbird – Sings all year (and all night). Eastern Bluebird – Permanent resident, though they flock up in winter. Eastern Towhee – Scratching in the leaf litter. "Drink-your-tea!" American Robin – Resident, but they roam in large nomadic flocks in winter. Downy Woodpecker Hairy Woodpecker Red-Bellied Woodpecker Red-Headed Woodpecker Northern Flicker – Our only ground-feeding woodpecker. White-Breasted Nuthatch Brown-Headed Nuthatch – Squeaky toy sounds; loves pine trees. House Finch American Goldfinch – Turns drab olive-brown in winter. Pine Warbler – One of the few warblers that stays all winter. Common Grackle House Sparrow Song Sparrow – (Resident in North GA/mountains; winter-only in South GA). ❄️ Winter Residents (Oct – April) Yellow-Bellied Sapsucker – Strictly a winter visitor in the South. Dark-Eyed Junco – The "Snowbird." White-Throated Sparrow – "Old Sam Peabody" song. Ruby-Crowned Kinglet – Tiny, hyperactive, flicks wings. Golden-Crowned Kinglet – Tiny, stays high in evergreens. Cedar Waxwing – Nomadic winter flocks seeking berries. Purple Finch – Irruptive winter guest; rare compared to House Finch. Pine Siskin – Rare/Irruptive winter finch. Hermit Thrush Yellow-Rumped Warbler – The "Butter-butt." Savannah Sparrow Field Sparrow Red-Winged Blackbird – Often flocks in winter. ☀️ Summer Residents & Migrants (Spring/Summer) Ruby-Throated Hummingbird – (April–Sept) Wood Thrush – Famous flute-like song. Rose-Breasted Grosbeak – Migrant (passes through) or breeds in high mountains. Gray Catbird – "Mew" call like a cat. Chipping Sparrow Eastern Phoebe – Often listed as hardy migrant.
