Handle Cortisol - Pharmacist Ben Fuchs - Moment of Truth
Like all biochemicals, the stress hormone cortisol is an important functional and fundamental molecule of wellness. Under ordinary conditions and in healthy amounts, it's a major player in the body's sugar processing system. Cortisol is also our wake-up substance. When morning sunshine hits the brain via the eyes, a surge of the chemical enters into the bloodstream and we wake up. Cortisol is such a powerful anti-inflammatory, that every year drug companies make billions of dollars on synthetic versions of the natural stuff and spend billions more looking for new ones. Under ordinary circumstances, cortisol is secreted cyclically, with the highest amounts pumped out of the adrenal glands some 30 minutes after waking, gradually declining throughout the day. It reaches its lowest point when we go to bed at night. The problem arises from the steady agitation of a fast-paced stress-filled lifestyle, that leads to chronically elevated levels of the biomolecule, resulting in anxiety, insomnia, the accumulation of belly fat and weight gain. Even worse, over time cells become resistant to the hormone, resulting in the production of greater and greater levels of cortisol. If you want to end resistance and restore a balanced daily cycle, consider making some lifestyle changes. Meditation and slow deep rhythmic breathing practices trigger a cortisol lowering relaxation response. Drinking water is important. Dehydration can throw off cortisol levels. Nutritional supplements like zinc, vitamin C, the B complex (especially vitamin b5) are major players in adrenal health and in helping the body handle stress.
