Post Brexit, Northern Ireland Protocol needs unionist consent says Boris Johnson! (4k)
It's a pity our PM wasn't shouting this more loudly from the rooftops from the get-go! FACEBOOK: @JeffTaylorBrexit TWITTER: @JeffTaylorUK Post Brexit, Northern Ireland Protocol needs unionist consent says Boris Johnson! (4k) In a visit to Northern Ireland the PM Boris Johnson met with the DUP leader Arlene Foster and her Deputy Lord Dodds, in Foster's constituency. And once again he was pressured by the DUP leader to tear up the Irish Border Protocol that is causing so many problems for the people and businesses of Northern Ireland. What with all the stories of the EU stopping vehicles with mud on their tyres moving from Britain into Northern Ireland. Afterwards the PM said: "There has got to be east-west consent to what is going on, as well as north-south. We want to make sure that is built into that." He also said that the protocol was not working as intended so it needs correcting. Now, I would have thought that if the protocol was set up to truly respect the Belfast Agreement then there would be no need to now 'build it in'. Would there? And as far as I can see, the best correction would be to apply a shredder to the document. As we all know, the protocol is there, ore meant to be there, to respect the Good Friday (Belfast) Agreement (GFA). And the GFA is designed to respect the positions of both the Republicans and the pro-UK Unionists who live on the island of Ireland. But the EU and Republic have always intended to apply the protocol in one direction only. Therefore they are in continual breach of the Belfast Agreement. But it appears to me that it's only recently that the UK government has started to really come out and back the unionist cause. And call me cynical, but I have occasionally wondered whether this whole protocol thing is all a test to see how deep and wide the Unionist sympathies still went. With a view to using the protocol to move Northern Ireland out of the UK and into the Republic over time, should there be little or no push-back. I put that down as a very remote possibility, but if it is the case then they got the whole thing wrong. And now they have their answer. Because the protocol has upset the constitutional balance of Northern Ireland in a very obvious way and it's upsetting a lot of people. And the way the EU is pushing for the protocol to be operated goes against the actual aims of the protocol itself. But Brussels and the Republic of Ireland are wilfully blind to it. They are the guilty parties here. And all I see them doing is doubling down on it, hoping to bully Northern Ireland into submission. Why we continue to try and work with them is beyond me. 4k. 4k video. #Brexit #NorthernIreland #IrishBorderProtocol
