How to Preach Practical Sermons Without Becoming Moralistic

We all want sermons that are practical — sermons that actually help people obey God. But not every practical sermon is Christian. In this video, I explore the difference between moralistic, therapeutic, and Christ-centered preaching — even when all three give the exact same application. Using a single biblical passage, I show how sermons can sound faithful on the surface while subtly shifting the weight of obedience onto the listener. I also explain why simply saying “God forgave you, so forgive others” isn’t enough — and how true gospel application goes deeper, addressing the sin beneath the sin and grounding obedience in our union with Christ. We’ll look at: Why moralistic sermons create pressure but not transformation Why therapeutic sermons focus on feelings rather than Christ How the gospel changes the heart before it ever commands the will Why identity in Christ must come before application How Christ-centered preaching produces real, lasting obedience My hope is to help pastors, teachers, and thoughtful church members better understand what biblical, Christ-centered preaching actually looks like — and why it’s the most practical preaching of all.
