Knee pain is one of the most frequent problems I see when I coach so if you are suffering, don't worry, you are not alone! The most common cause of knee pain is incorrect technique during lower body exercises like squats, running, lunging and jumping. When we repeatedly do these exercises with poor form the ligaments and cartilage begin to suffer. So, when you experience pain it could be a build up of months or even years of wear and tear. This is why I want to help! I've covered two lower body exercises in this video, squats and lunges, because they are the most fundamental exercises we use when we train. SQUAT: Doing squats with bad form can turn the exercise against you though, so it is important to begin doing squats by learning how to do a squat with correct form. This video will show you the key components: 1) Take a wide stance (about shoulder-width apart) 2) Put your hands out in front of you for balance 3) Sit back as if you are sitting in a chair, keeping your feet flat on the ground and your knees behind your toes. 4) As you are sitting back, keep your chest up and your head looking forward. When you are first starting off with squats, do 1-3 sets with 10 reps in each set and 30-60 seconds rest in between, and really concentrate on doing the form correctly. As you build strength in your legs, you can add sets or more reps to each set. LUNGE: Lunges are a quintessential exercise; you can do them anywhere and the effects can be seen in no time, in the form of shapely, toned legs. If you're planning on incorporating lunges into your routine, however, make sure you're not doing more harm than good. Find out how to do lunges correctly below. Try it out! PLANK: The plank is a great core exercise that doesn't involve doing any crunches. In fact, the basic plank doesn't involve moving at all. This is referred to as an isometric exercise. The key with the plank is to engage you core muscles in the right way so that through the effort of balancing and stabilizing your body, you are giving your core muscles a fantastic workout. And if you don't think you can get a good workout by holding still, just wait until you try to hold a plank for 30-60 seconds... you're going to feel it!
