I’ll let John Oates tell you the story next, but they were in rival bands and decided to join forces. It would be the beginning of the most successful duo or the rock and roll era with 29 top 40 hits including six number one hits on the hot 100. They are one of my favorite groups ever. They were one of those rare musical institutions that every generation love, even at their peak. When I was a kid they were beloved by my mom and dad who always bought their new record, and played it on our family turntable stereo and then I would buy the cassette, even my grandparents loved them some Hall and Oates. i remember my Grandpa singing their number one hit Kiss On My List, He was totally messing up the lyrics, singing your kiss is on my lips. When I tried to correct him he got pretty perturbed. He said why would they be saying your kiss is on my list? Like a grocery list? No their saying lips. The Good Old Days. The fact of the matter is Daryl Hall and John Oates are extremely underrated. they were criminally under appreciated by music critics back when that mattered. Actually I’m not sure if critics ever mattered. What I mean to say is that they were never talked about in the same breath as the critical darlings of the day, their albums never chosen on the best of lists of their peak years and It used to drive me nuts, considering that the duo could out sing and our harmonize and band a their peak in those days. They should’ve been an easy first ballot rock and roll hall of fame inductee and should’ve been crowned as the geniuses that they are. Daryl Hall has arguably one of the greatest voices in the history of popular music. Just go watch the recording session or video of the original We are the World song where the best of the best gathered into a room for a few hours with Quincy Jones conducting and if you listen carefully there are about 5 or 6 knockouts punches in the song out of the numerous singers there . The game changing moments of course belonged to Ray Charles, Steve Perry, and Daryl Hall amongst a few other stand out. That’s really saying something since, the who’s who of American music were in attendance there. Combine the commanding powerhouse vocal Daryl Hall with the extravagant soulfulness of John Oates potent pipes and you have not only the biggest selling duo of the rock era but the authoritative vocal twosome of the time.
