FUF Teaching Tips #8
Face-Up First Teaching Tips #8 Thanks for watching! SKILLS CHALLENGE: Walk the Plank Can a child swim? Use these challenges to find out. The FUF Challenges are fun, challenging, and rewarding. They are good tools for you to use in addition to the S.W.I.M. Model to assess swimming ability. However, it is important to remember that a certificate hanging on the wall won't keep a child safe. Children require constant supervision in and around the water, and you need to reassess swimming ability every time a child enters the water. FUF Challenges Take the Plunge (survival challenge) Walk the Plank (jumping from a height, fully clothed) Dump Test (demonstrates ability to use flotation toys) Endurance Challenge (evaluates strength and lifesaving endurance) Stroke Proficiency Challenge (evaluates competitive stroke proficiency) FUF Challenge 500 (timed swim combining all elements) WALK THE PLANK Swimmer must jump into deep water from a height, fully clothed (top, bottom, shoes), recover to a relaxed backfloat, and then exit the pool. Make sure your swimmers have passed Take the Plunge before moving on to Walk the Plank. Take the Plunge Videos Take the Plunge: • Take the Plunge Pool Party Test: • Pool Party Skills Test I use the Take the Plunge test as my diving board and pool party test. Swimmers who pass may participate in those activities. And speaking of parties... I typically use lost and found clothing for this challenge, but at holiday time we have a party. Swimmers jump in wearing holiday pajamas and socks or slippers. Ho! Ho! Ho! See a video of a holiday Walk the Plank event here: • Santa Skills Challenge TIP #2 Practice the challenge without clothes first, so swimmers know what is expected. Walk the Plank is fun. Send me links or videos of your walk the plank challenges. I’ll post them. [email protected] We swim for good times!® You can too.
