D. Snyder; Victoria Horne, flute WELCOME CALL TO WORSHIP One: An angel spoke to Mary: “Do not be afraid!” All: The child she carries will be God’s son, and the world will never be the same. One: An angel spoke to Mary: “Do not be afraid!” All: God was with her, and God is with us, drawing us into worship and praise. HYMN: The Promise, Ken Bible ADVENT CANDLE LIGHTING One: Last Sunday we lit the candle of hope and the candle of peace, waiting in hopeful expectation for the Prince of Peace. Today we light the candle of love. Just as Mary held Jesus in her arms, so too does God hold our world in love. As we hear the story of Christ’s birth through scripture and song, we remember how deep and wide God’s love is for us, who holds us just as a mother holds her child. We light these candles in Hope, Peace, and Love. Please join us in prayer: All: God as we light another candle today, drawing ever closer to Christmas, we pray the light of your love would drive away all hatred and division. May the love that comes into our world in Jesus Christ be revealed in our hearts and may it shine brightly into the world. Amen. CANDLE HYMN: The Holy Fire of Advent, Elana Keppel Levy CALL TO CONFESSION: As Christmas morning draws ever closer, we prepare ourselves for the arrival of Jesus by seeking God’s grace and forgiveness for all the wrong we have done. Let us together confess our sins before God and neighbor. PRAYER OF CONFESSION: God of Good News, You say to us, “You are highly favored,” but we struggle to see how that could be. You say “Do not be afraid,” but we are afraid all the time. You say, “Even the impossible is possible, just look at Elizabeth!” But hope slips through our hands like water. The impossible still feels impossible. Today we pray: Teach us to sing like Mary. Teach us to laugh like Elizabeth. Teach us to trust like the angels. Forgive us when we can only do one at a time, or none at all. Amen. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON: Friends, the Good News is this: the child who will soon be born brings with him God’s love, grace, and mercy. He comes not to condemn but to forgive. Trust this good news and be at peace. Thanks be to God. Amen. PASSING OF THE PEACE One: The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. All: And also with you.
