TODAY'S MUSIC FOR BLACK HISTORY MONTH Anthem, Nobody knows the trouble I see, is a setting of a traditional African-American spiritual by the English Composer, Michael Tippett, who included it along with four other spirituals in his oratorio, A child of our time (first performed in 1944). Tippett was moved to compose the work following the unsettling events of the late 1930s, which included the outbreak of war in September 1939. Tippett believed that while Christian hymns spoke most resonantly to Christian people, spirituals had a more evident and accessible message to everyone, and particularly those who have had the visceral experience of oppression. The hymn, Precious Lord, was one of some 3000 songs (a third of them in the Gospel tradition), by the musician and evangelist Thomas Andrew Dorsey (a native of Georgia). Dorsey grew up playing the blues in Atlanta barrelhouses, before moving to Chicago to become music director at Pilgrim Baptist Church in the early 1930s (remaining there for over fifty years). Dorsey was said to have combined "the good news of the Gospel with the bad news of the blues" in his music (Anthony Heilbut). _________________ LIVE-STREAMED | FEBRUARY 25, 2024 St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, Ottawa 82 Kent Street, Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA CONNECT WITH OUR CHURCH ►► Web: https://www.standrewsottawa.ca ►► YouTube:    / @standrewspresbyterianottawa   ►► Facebook:   / standrewsottawa   ►► Music as Sanctuary Concert Series:    / @standrewsottawa-concerts
