4:3 Iraqi troops advancing on Tikrit, held by Islamic State group fighters

(7 Jul 2014) The Iraqi army says soldiers are advancing on the northern city of Tikrit, which had been taken over by Islamic militants in recent weeks. Footage filmed by a freelance cameraman showed an Iraqi military convoy en route from Samarra to Tikrit, hometown of former president Saddam Hussein. The cameraman was given permission to travel with the convoy. The army says it is sweeping the area of militants as it advances on the city. At one point on the video, a controlled explosion is seen being carried out on an improvised explosive device (IED), which was detected on the outskirts of Tikrit by the advancing soldiers. Sunni militants, including fighters from the Islamic State group, captured the city last month.
