Migrant Monday: Yellow-rumped Warblers

Migrant Monday: Yellow-rumped Warblers

Yellow-rumped warblers come in three variants; Audubon's, Myrtle and Goldman's. You are likely to see both Audubon's and/or Myrtle yellow-rumped warblers at Malheur NWR and both males are pictured here. Audubon's with the yellow throat and myrtle with the white. Yellow-rumped warblers are thought to be among the most variable foragers of all warbler species. They are the only species of warbler known to digest the waxes from bayberry and wax myrtles. Their ability to eat these fruit allow them to forage at northern latitudes longer than other species. UPDATE: 1st Fall arrival was spotted today at Refuge HQ apricot tree! What species would you like to see featured in future Migrant Monday posts?
