St. Jerome (30 September): Can A Saint Be Cranky?

Today we celebrate St. Jerome, one of the greatest biblical scholars and Doctors of the Church. Known for his fiery personality, ascetic lifestyle, and profound love for Scripture, St. Jerome devoted his life to prayer, study, and defending the faith. In this homily and reflection, we explore: Jerome’s journey from Rome to the desert and then to Bethlehem, where he founded monasteries. His tireless dedication to translating Scripture from Hebrew and Greek into Latin, producing what became the Vulgate Bible. His famous quote: “Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.” His sometimes sharp disputes, even with St. Augustine, reminding us that saints are deeply human too. The importance of approaching Scripture with humility, study, and reverence, not with quick and shallow interpretations. Why the Magisterium of the Catholic Church is essential for guiding the faithful in true understanding of God’s Word. This video is not just about Church history—it’s a reminder for us today. St. Jerome teaches that the Word of God should both console and convict us, challenging us to grow in holiness. 🙏 May this reflection inspire us to dive deeper into Scripture with the same zeal and humility as St. Jerome.
