Dive deeper into your faith with us! Reflect on Sunday’s Mass readings each week through The Word Exposed with Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, pro-prefect for the Dicastery for Evangelization. Today is the Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time; and in today’s gospel, we hear the familiar story of Lazarus and the rich man. Jesus tells the Pharisees of a rich man who dressed finely and dined sumptuously every day but ignored the poor man Lazarus covered with sores and lying at his door. When they died, Lazarus was taken “by angels to the bosom of Abraham” while the rich man went to “the netherworld, where he was in torment.” He cried out to Abraham, asking if Lazarus could “dip the tip of his finger in water and cool [his] tongue” or if Lazarus could be sent to his brothers “that he may warn them [of the] place of torment.” His requests were denied. Through this story, the Lord is teaching the Pharisees—and us too, today—about the consequence of neglecting the poor and those in the margins. The rich man knew Lazarus—he recognized him in the afterlife—but he was indifferent to his sufferings when they were still alive. Concern for the many Lazaruses around us is at the core of “Moses and the prophets,” which Jesus affirms in his teachings.
