Friday, September 26 | Lesson 13 FOR STUDY AND MEDITATION: Read the chapter titled "The Tabernacle and Its Services" in the book Patriarchs and Prophets, by Ellen G. White, pp. 356-372. “The construction of the Sanctuary was preceded by a divine act of redemption, namely, the liberation of Israel from the enslaving power of Egypt. In turn, this act was followed by God's willingness to enter into a permanent covenant relationship with his people. He would be their God, and they would be his people (Exod. 6:7). The way they would relate to him and to one another was defined by the covenant law. The Tabernacle was truly a place of gathering, a place where God and humans met. It was only after redemption and the establishment of a permanent union with God through the Covenant that the people had access to God in his dwelling place” (Andrews Bible Commentary, vol. 1, p. 264). For her part, Ellen White describes the purpose of the Sanctuary services: “Thus, in the service of the Tabernacle, and in that of the Temple which later stood in its place, the people were daily taught the great truths concerning the death and ministry of Christ, and once a year their thoughts were carried forward to the closing events of the great controversy between Christ and Satan, the final purification of the universe from sin and sinners” (Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 372). DISCUSSION QUESTIONS: 1. The shedding of blood was a central element of the worship services at the Sanctuary. Various types of animals were sacrificed, and their blood was used in almost every ritual performed there. What did blood symbolize, and what did all these sacrifices ultimately aim at? 2. As amazing as it was that God, the Creator of the universe, dwelt in the Sanctuary among His people, it is even more amazing that He came to dwell among us as one of us, as a human being. That in itself would have been an astonishing expression of love. But to offer Himself as a sacrifice for sin? That is, to die in our place? What does this teach us about God's character? What does it teach us, furthermore, about how much God desires to see us saved in His eternal kingdom? 3. Read Hebrews 8:1–6.
